Raven Coal resolution press release
Blue Community certificate presented to Cumberland Village Council
On July 9, the Village Council of Cumberland – a town in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island – voted to become a Blue Community. That means the community recognizes the human right to water, it will stop the sale of bottled water in municipal facilities, and it commits to keep drinking water and wastewater services publicly owned and operated. Yesterday, the Comox Valley Record reports, “Linda Safford of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians presented a certificate to council recognizing the village as a Blue Community. The organization, along with the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition, has called on local governments to protect and conserve water by banning the sale of bottled water at events and in public facilities, among other measures.”

Defend Our Coast Event in Victoria, BC – October 22
4,500 people came together on October 22 on the lawns for the BC Legislature in the ‘the largest act of peaceful civil disobedience to stop tar sands pipelines and tankers that Canada has ever seen.” They came together to express their indignation that corporate profits are being given precedence over our environment, that First Nation rights are not being respected, and that our Canadian economy is being driven by the toxic greenhouse-gas-polluting tar sands industry.
44 members and supporters of the Comox Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians gathered before dawn to bus down to the Defend Our Coast rally where they spent the day listening to speaker after speaker, including the Council of Canadian’s National Chairperson, Maude Barlow, reinforce the message that the risk of an oil spill is simply too great and that governments need to be providing leadership in transitioning from a fossil fuel economy.
