On Sat. May 10, communities across Canada are rallying in a national day of action called Defend Our Climate, Defend Our Communities. You are invited to participate in the Courtenay action! Bring your friends, family and unlikely neighbors. Also bring your strong voices, signs and art!
When: Saturday May 10, starting at 1pm
Where: Fountain Plaza outside the Sid Williams Theatre on 5th Street. Please visit our Facebook event page to RSVP and invite your friends. We’ll begin with song and speakers. Then we’ll march to Don McRae’s office on 5th Street to deliver signed letters requesting a meeting to discuss our concerns.
Why now? Democracy is in Deficit!
· Tankers and Oil Spills: coming too soon to a shoreline near you? The federal cabinet is expected to make a decision in June on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline proposal.
· Coal port expansions: the atmosphere is everyone’s backyard. Texada Island and Port of Metro Vancouver are slated to become key points in a scheme to ramp up coal exports from BC. It’s always a good time to remind neighbours to say No to the Raven Coal Mine.
· Protect Our Agricultural Land Reserve: the provincial government is using Bill C-24 to unilaterally break up one of the best agricultural land protection policies in North America, without consulting farmers!
Please help us send a loud and clear message to all levels of government to reject the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan proposals and coal expansion projects, and to defend our ALR. We will demand a meeting with our MLA Don McRae to table our concerns and request action for our communities.
