Do you get acid reflux from watching the news out of Ottawa? Fear for the future of your job? Health care? The environment? Our sovereignty as Canadians? Do you wake up each morning wondering if you’re still in Canada?
As the need for the public voice grows more urgent, why do people stay home from the polls in greater numbers than ever? Maybe our tired, anemic old electoral system is the problem.
Albert Einstein famously defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Our current system – first-past-the-post – is an outdated relic from the days when women and non-Caucasian men didn’t even have a vote. And it uses some pretty wonky math: the Harper Conservatives won the 2011 election with the support of less than 24% of eligible voters. You call that democratic?
We keep throwing our votes to the wind and hoping things will get better. That’s called “magical thinking”. It’s time for a real change. As part of its campaign to protect democracy, the Council of Canadians has consistently affirmed its support of proportional representation (PR). Our first task is to get a democracy. Maybe PR is a better way to run a country. Over 80 nations around the world think so.
If you’re not sure, check out Fair Vote Canada’s website at http://www.fairvote.ca/. It’s smart, readable and explodes a lot of myths in clear language. Fair Vote Canada is a nation-wide, grassroots, multi-partisan movement of people like us. Our own Maude Barlow is on their national Advisory Board, along with a lot of other notable Canadians. You can see the list here: http://www.fairvote.ca/contact/#advisoryboard .
